Watercolour Painting For Beginners and Improvers

This course aims to provide an introduction to the beauty and adventure of watercolour painting, for beginners. Through guided exercises, students will explore the basic techniques of watercolour, including paint consistency, brush techniques and the mixing and application of colour using a limited and versatile palette. Students will begin to explore colour and tonal contrast to create depth and dynamism in landscape compositions. Students will apply techniques in a step-by-step watercolour landscape, from transferring design to final painting. Beginners and improvers welcome.

Course aim

Learn watercolour techniques form scratch, to create vibrant and naturalistic paintings. Beginners and improvers welcome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore a range of washes: flat, graduated and variegated.
  • Create a colour wheel from a limited palette, exploring the properties and relationships of colour.
  • Explore the mixing and application of colour e.g.mixing on the palette, wet-in-wet and glazing techniques.
  • Explore a range of brush techniques to create a variety of shape and texture e.g. stippling, masking, lifting out and calligraphic brushwork.
  • Learn how to fix mistakes and avoid common pitfalls in watercolour painting.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need to bring their own watercolour paints and equipment. A materials list can be provided.
