Course aim

This course will provide the students with the skills to make a puppet and learn how to use it. It will also teach performance skills to enable students to participate in a public performance at the end of the course.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This is the second year of a two year Drama project, but as the focus will change from Jan 2019 and therefore it could still be suitable for new students.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make a puppet with other students.
  • Use a puppet for a theatrical performance.
  • Design and create a shadow puppet
  • Perform a character or several characters for a public performance.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be expected to attend rehearsals for a performance in addition to class time.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will receive instruction and feedback on making and using puppets from a puppeteer from Fetch Theatre Company in addition to WEA tutor and peer feedback. Your performance will be evaluated by audience feedback after taking part in a play.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
