Medieval Colour with Rosemary Firman

Ref: C3126617

Today we live in a world which is saturated with colour, but 800 years ago, colour was a luxury and its production labour intensive and expensive. Ordinary people would have owned little that was coloured but churches and the objects in them were ablaze with wonderful colour. This workshop looks at traces of colour in medieval churches and how today the colours' original brightness can still be experienced in the pages of manuscript books. We will look at how the colours were made, where they came from and how they were valued. There will be a chance to see some bright medieval colours in the illuminations in books from the Chained Library.
