How to draw and paint birds and animals

You will work predominantly with charcoal, soft pastels and pastel pencils to complete a number of sketches and longer studies of animals and/or a birds of your choice. You will be shown how to work with a range of techniques including setting a ground and lifting out, blending colours, building up texture and painting with pastels while being encouraged to develop your personal response to the subject matter.

How to work with line, proportion, shape, texture and tone when depicting birds and animals.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Compare and discuss the techniques and materials used in different artists work in this subject matter
  • Use a range of techniques working with charcoal, soft pastel and pastel pencils.
  • Use a range of different applications of media to describe animal and bird textures
  • Blend and mix colours in dry and wet media

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You may with to bring an apron with you.
