Treasures of the Earth

Ref: C3126170

You may already know something of the science of geology. Perhaps the natural beauty of mineral crystals, glistening in a rock crevice, has caught your eye. This course will introduce you to the crystals, minerals and gemstones that form the Earth's surface and their identification using simple techniques.

Course aim

A beginners' course to introduce the origin and composition of the crystals & minerals that form the Earth's crust and their identification using simple techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Appreciate that the Earth's surface is largely made up of eight major elements and that all other elements and their compounds need to be concentrated by natural processes to form useful economic deposits;
  • Appreciate that the Earth's resources are finite and need to be conserved carefully;
  • Identify the common minerals that make up our crustal rocks.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The course will include practical exercises on mineral specimens brought in by the tutor.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A small hand lens or reading glass would be useful for examining small crystals and rock specimens. The tutor will have some available at every class session. The tutor will provide other testing equipment and reference books for identification.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • If you already have some mineral identification books, please bring them to the class.
