The Making of Mountains

Ref: C3126157

Modern geology is very reliant on the painstaking work of 19th Century Survey geologists. Their maps will form the basis of our exploration of structural geology, combining the local details of faults and folds with a modern interpretation of how the world's major mountain belts were formed.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the plate tectonic processes that give rise to the world's spectacular mountain ranges and how similar processes operated in past geological history.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Appreciate the tectonic processes that cause the uplift of the world's major mountain belts;
  • Appreciate that these processes have continued throughout geological time as part of major cycles of plate tectonics;
  • Describe and identify folds, faults and igneous intrusions on geological maps.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The tutor will bring rock specimens and practice geological maps to each session to explain the key concepts behind geological maps.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • The tutor will provide rock specimens, practice geological maps and real examples of local geological maps. A reading glass could be useful but is not essential.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
