Edward Elgar - his works, Early, Middle and Late

This course will provide an a picture of Elgar's early life and his beginnings as a composer and move onto his greatest period as a composer. We will look at his major works and finish with an exploration of his late works and a look at his place in English music.;

Course aim

To aid appreciation of the progression of the maturing of a great composer.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the progression of composition.
  • Reflect on the nature/nurture debate of music.
  • Gain a deeper knowledge of a creative life.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
