An exploration of the extensive range of Handel's creative output. We will look at his instrumental music, view examples on DVD of his numerous operas as well as investigate his substantial contribution to the development of the oratorio for an English audience.

Course aim

Provide an overview of Handel's creative output. Gain an appreciation of the range of Handel's music across different genres and his responses to the development of English musical tastes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Increased knowledge of Handel's musical output.
  • Enhanced appreciation of Handel's musical style.
  • Awareness of the most important Handel's compositions
  • Increased awareness of other composers contemporaneous with Handel.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
