Looking at Local Churches

An evening meeting with illustrated lecture and discussion will highlight some of the key points of interest in local churches dating from Saxon times to the present day, including architectural features, historical associations, interesting fittings and furnishings, and beautiful stained glass, wall paintings and sculpture. We will then make visits to a selection of local churches to compare and contrast the styles, types and stories of buildings in South West Herefordshire and North West Monmouthshire.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the churches of the Black Mountains and Golden Valley areas of Herefordshire and Monmouthshire, looking at architecture, history, furnishings and works of art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to recognise and interpret key architectural features of church buildings
  • Understand better local churches and their history
  • Understand better the furnishings, decorative and commemorative features of local churches

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Suitable clothing and footwear for visiting country churches and churchyards.
