The Art of the Silk Road

This course will study how the various land and sea routes related to the Silk Road carried not only silk but also vast quantities of prized artifacts, minerals, food and spices from Asia to Europe and vice versa. The routes have also enabled the successful diffusion of religious, scientific and cultural ideas that have had a profound effect on the history of the world.Focus will be on the art and architecture produced in areas along the route - from Xian to Kashgar, Samarkand, Istanbul and Venice.

Course aim

To provide an overview of the huge influence of the Silk Road on the art and architecture of the peoples of that area over two thousand years.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify what is meant by The Silk Road
  • Assess the effects of culture contact on the art and architecture of the area
  • Understand the influence of the Silk Road today

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
