The Lost Province: Herefordshire in the Dark Ages

This the creation story for Herefordshire as it emerged from the collapse of the Roman Empire and became a distinct British region, separated from the Anglo-Saxon world of the Midlands and South but also different from Celtic-Welsh region to the West. Gradually, from c.700 Herefordshire became anglicised and was integrated into Mercian kingdom developing in the Midlands and the population began to speak English. Finally, the shire was created by the kings of Wessex but the county remained distinct from the world beyond the Malverns.

Course aim

To explore the history of Herefordshire from the end of the Roman Empire to age of Alfred the Great - from c.400 AD to c.900 AD

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand a complex area of English History, exploiting modern documentary research and archaeology
  • Place the history of Herefordshire in a national context
  • Debate issues of continuity and change, which underpin this complex era
  • Understand some complex terminology eg. Celtic, sub-Roman,Englishness, Welshness, miagration, settlement, paganism, christianity, lordship, kingship, Romanitas etc.
  • Reflect on the physical remains in the present countryside.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Each session will include a revision excercise to assess understanding

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
