Aspects of Contemporary Art 1956-2016

This eight-session course takes a selection of works by eight artists in the 60 year period 1956- 2016 in Europe and North America. The course sets out from conceptual and practical overviews of contemporary and recent painting and concludes with work by two artists working in land art. Close-views for these sessions will include work by Philip Guston, Sandra Blow, Helen Frankenthaler, Cy Twombly, Ken Kiff, Anselm Kiefer, Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson.

Course aim

To provide a vocabulary to describe some aspects of contemporary art. To enhance recognition of the functions and styles involved in the production of work in contemporary art in the period 1956- 2016 in Europe and North America.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand a vocabulary to describe some aspects of contemporary art.
  • Enhance recognition of the functions behind the production of some aspects of contemporary art.
  • Enhance recognition of aspects of period style in contemporary art.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be invited to use a web site specifically linked to the sessions you attend.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Your tutor will ensure you are making progress towards your learning goals through a range of methods appropriate to you and the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Some students would benefit from a notebook.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • A specific itemised calendar will be provided on day one which could lead you to research some of the works by the artists involved.
