The course will focus on 3 key areas: * Everyday life in the trenches * Ypres and the Somme : Two key battles of the Great War * The Western Front battlefields after the war

Course aim

To develop knowledge and understanding of a range of aspects of the Great War. To enable participants to understand how the battlefields developed after the war and how to get the most from a present day visit.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a greater understanding of the nature of everyday life in the trenches for the typical soldier of the time.
  • Have a better understanding of the nature and significance of the battles of Ypres and the Somme.
  • Have some understanding of the nature of some of the controversial issues surrounding these battles
  • Have an understanding of how the areas of fighting recovered from the war
  • Make the most of a possible visit to the Great War battlefields

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
