Management and leadership are different activities. Management, including supervision, is about getting things done whereas leadership tends to focus on influencing, motivating and inspiring people. This workshop encourages students to understand the differences and develop their skills accordingly. The workshop takes students through the theory and the practice of managing and leading. It will cover the processes of managing and a framework to understand different levels of leadership. A series of exercises will enable students to apply their learning and try out some techniques.

Course aim

This all day workshop provides an introduction and a refresher for students wanting to understand and improve their management and leadership skills and knowledge. It also covers supervisory approaches and skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the difference between managing and leading
  • Be more aware of my personal approach to managing and leading
  • Identify and draw on a range of different theories and approaches in my practice
  • Follow on with more learning if I choose to on my own

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • All materials will be provided
