Flower Arranging

Aimed at those who wish to improve their practical skills and knowledge of floristry at home. This is a practical based course with some class room study over 4wks. Step by step introduction into floral design and care, allowing you to increase your knowledge and enjoyment or to open up new friendships or further learning opportunities. Learners will develop an understanding of the design principles and gain new skill which will allow you to plan, create and care for seasonal displays at home.

Course aim

On completion learners will be able to prepare and maintain decorative floral displays for all year round interest and develop an understanding of conditioning techniques, feeding and aftercare of seasonal cut flowers

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • Learners with little or no prior knowledge of floristry, who wish to develop their understanding of many design and conditioning processes, This course will be ideally suited to a first time florist who wish to develop their knowledge or go on to further education or training.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify how to condition flowers for arranging
  • Design and arrange decorative floral displays
  • Demonstrate how to carry out basic preparation techniques
  • Identify the principles of floral design and colour
  • Identify how to care for and feed cut flowers to prolong displays

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Class room presentation (Teacher led), professional discussions, practical sessions and access to reference books

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Continues assessment through, professional discussion, peer assessment, practical sessions, create floral arrangements, practical sessions using hand tools and equipment.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Learners will be expected to supply some floral material

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
