Garden Design - phase one

Aimed at learners looking to develop an understanding and the skills needed to plan an attractive and functional garden space.This 5 week course looks into all aspects of planning and planting an attractive and functional garden layout. Each week learners will discover a different element of the Garden and Planting design process from discovering what type of garden soil they have, what will be the most suitable plants to use, measuring up their space to drawing the plan of their own garden project. Finally discovering what style of garden they wish for their own garden space.

Course aim

Designed to provide the practical skills and knowledge needed to design your own garden space along with the information needed when deciding right plant, right place. Developing practical skills, using a range of materials.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No previous experience of Garden design is required, although a general interest in gardening and a love of being outdoors along with a willingness to learn is essential. Course is aimed at beginners level for Learners with little or no prior knowledge of gardening.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Assess and survey an area, collect information about the site and outside sources.
  • Use measuring and drawing equipment effectively
  • Identify the principles of Garden design
  • Carry out Soil testing to determine acid and alkaline soil conditions
  • Identify the uses of hard and Soft landscape materials

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Class room presentation (Teacher led), professional discussions, practical sessions, reading books, accessing internet resources.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Professional discussion, peer assessment, practical sessions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Writing paper, pens & pencils, outdoor footwear and clothing to be provided by the learner

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
