Local history of Sunderland

An introductory history of Sunderland which covers eg. the development of the local industries, the river and harbour, public health and social conditions, religion etc. Sources used will include the unique Rain's Eye Plan, maps showing the growth of the city, census returns, The Census of Worship of 1851, local newspapers, public health reports etc. We will also encounter a few of the local "notables2 of Sunderland on our journey through time

Course aim

A brief introduction to aspects of the history of Sunderland and methods and sources used by local historians. We will look at industry and the economic development of the city, social conditions and issues, some local notable people etc.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Display knowledge of several of the key aspects of the development of modern Sunderland
  • Outline some of the social issues and problems associated with the growth of Sunderland in the modern period
  • Display a familiarity with some of the sources used by local historians

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
