To introduce you to a range of drawing media including but not limited to pencil sketching, Watercolour pencil , Watercolour painting. Exploring techniques, tools and materials along with styles and different approaches to painting and drawing. To encourage students to be individual and engage in their own ideas as well as having lots of group activity and tutor demonstrations too. You will develop a painting from the initial planning and drawing through to final paint application of a subject that inspires you. A greater understanding of the ranges of drawing and painting materials on the market, and which one to use where will be gained. This is a relaxed learning environment aiming at maintaining or improving health and wellbeing as well as learning a stimulating enjoyable skill /hobby which can be carried out at home, workplace or just in class.

Course aim

To improve your painting and drawing skills and so develop confidence in your own creative ability in a fun and informative way. . You will be guided step by step through the processes by a supportive approachable Tutor. Beginners are most welcome

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have a greater understanding of the ranges of drawing and painting materials on the market and which one to use where.
  • Use a range of pencils to produce tonal sketches
  • Apply a variety of traditional watercolour techniques
  • Create a painting from a sketch through to the finished brush strokes
  • Have improved confidence in you painting and drawing skills

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • There will be lots of step by step demonstrations in class by your Tutor. Some home research in art styles in your own time would be beneficial to your learning.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • The tutor will support you through each session and give one to one advise as and when it’s required. Feedback will be constructive and encouraging.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • It is advisable to have your own equipment to be able to practice at home. Materials can be supplied initially and advice given at first session as to what you will need. Materials can be supplied throughout at a small cost. (You may be entitled to assistance) Tools can be borrowed in class.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
