Taster for West African drumming

Ref: C2524870

We will use West African djembe drums and other percussion to make music as a group. This will be a fun and creative session which is open to everyone over the age of 19.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to playing music in a group using drums and other percussion instruments

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make several different sounds on a djembe drum
  • Play a drumming rhythm as part of a group
  • Identify and hear a 'call' signal
  • Play boomwhacker rhythms as part of a group

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • As we will sit and play the drum between our knees, comfortable and appropriate clothing is recommended. We will also stand to play boomwhackers although sitting is optional too.
