This course is for those wishing to learn how to prepare the garden for the change in season. We will begin with basic gardening skills, such as weeding, digging and potting. We will learn how to plan for the season ahead and learn about plants suitable for the spring/summer season.

Course aim

To introduce students to the skills needed for spring into summer gardening. Students will learn planting and potting techniques and how to plan and grow plants for the season ahead.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre
  • This course is only open to members of WHiST

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plan and plant vegetables in our productive growing bed
  • Begin to direct sow seeds for the summer season.
  • Identify plants that need to be pruned in the summer and prune them.
  • Continue to create and develop the herb patch.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • As we will be working in the garden, students should wear old clothes and suitable stout footwear. They could bring their own garden gloves, if they have them.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
