This course will focus on American art and artists from the second half on the nineteenth century. We will ascertain the extent to which American art was influenced by other countries. We will consider American artists who primarily stayed in the United States as well as those artists who were American born but worked abroad. We will examine how social, political, economic, technological and cultural factors shaped American art and artists. Artists will include Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, James Whistler and John Singer Sargeant.

Course aim

This course will focus on American art from the second half of the nineteenth century. We will examine a wide range of art by a broad selection of American artists.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise a range of artworks created by American artists
  • recognise how social, political, cultural, technological and economic factors have shaped and influenced American art.
  • Provide some visual and contextual analysis of art works.
  • Ascertain the extent to which other countries influenced American art and American artists.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
