Explore Watercolour in a range of styles using traditional (e.g wet in wet , glazing, scumbling etc) and creative ( e.g salt and spatter, resists, pen & wash ) techniques . Perhaps try your hand at painting mixed media , Acrylic or Pastel the choice is yours. Develop your skills painting subjects that interest and inspire you in a relaxed, fun and informative class. This is a personal development opportunity for all abilities. You will have the expertise of an experienced tutor and professional artist to guide you.

Course aim

This course is designed to provide an opportunity to develop your painting or drawing skills by exploring a selection of media with expert guidance and tuition by a professional artist and experienced tutor. All abilities and beginners welcome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for anyone who would like to learn or improve their painting knowledge and ability .

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Apply Watercolour techniques in a various ways, exploring through exercises,so becoming more confident in its application.
  • Complete a watercolour painting in traditional techniques
  • Complete a Watercolour painting in Creative techniques from a subject of your choice.
  • Complete an Painting in a second medium of your choice.
  • Have a broader understanding of painting techniques in a range of media.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • There will be lots of demonstrations and explanations by your tutor in class. Looking at books and magazines, watching You Tube and browsing websites are all part of your research and development. No painting will be required at home although practice does help with development.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • On-going feedback and advise is available from your tutor as and when you need it.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will be expected to provide or cover the cost of your own materials . Some materials will be available for purchase from the tutor. Tools and equipment can be provided for classroom use free of charge.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
