This course includes safe best practice and a systematic approach to incident management. The course covers how to deal with external bleeding, internal bleeding and shock; and resuscitation procedures including choking. It can be tailored to include: Unconsciousness, causes and treatment.

Course aim

This course covers the essentials of managing immediate and potentially life threatening incidents in a systematic manner, for anyone who is required to take charge at an incident.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to assess an incident.
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally.
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally.
  • Be able to manage a casualty with external bleeding
  • Be able to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Practical and written assessments ..the course is an active course and participants will be asked to kneel , lie down and act as casualties for each other

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Suitable clothing as candidates will be expected to lie down and simulate being casualties for each other
