Functional Skills Qualification in Maths at Entry 3

We will use common situations like shopping, travel, house and home, DIY and health to perform calculations – adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying. We will use decimals and fractions and will practice using units of measurement and comparing data in charts and lists. These activities will help you to feel more independent in your everyday life as you encounter Maths.

Course aim

This course will help you to further develop your skills and confidence in Maths. You will practise your Maths skills through everyday situations. This course leads to a City & Guilds Entry 3 Functional Skills Maths qualification.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • You must be a fluent speaker of English.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Further increase my confidence in using my Maths in everyday life, count, read, write and order numbers up to 1000
  • Build on my ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide and use a calculator to solve problems and check answers
  • Read and use common fractions, e.g. ½, ¼ and ¾, e.g. to measure or estimate and decimals for counting and totalling money, e.g. £1.50 or 0.50p
  • Read, estimate and use measurement in practical contexts, e.g. measuring a room to paint or weighing food items for a recipe using the right equipment
  • Use lists to find, display and discuss information, e.g. comparison charts on websites, catalogues and brochures

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Official document(s) showing the correct spelling of your name, address and date of birth. Certificates for any Maths qualifications you already have. A folder, some paper and a pen/pencil to every lesson.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • It is useful to think about where you use Maths in everyday life and where you find this difficult.
