Learn practical skills to perform an Indian head massage, with or without oils. Discover the benefits of using oils such as coconut, sweet almond, and mustard to improve the condition of the hair and scalp. Gain an awareness of health conditions that may restrict or prevent a treatment. Identify the benefits of and Indian head massage such as relaxation, stress, improved sleep patterns and mood improvement. This is an interactive course and you will have the opportunity to receive and give a treatment within the classroom environment to practise your skills to enable you to safely treat your friends and family

Course aim

To provide the learners with the practical skills and underpinning knowledge to carry out a safe Indian head massage treatment on family and friends

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Prepare yourself and the working area for a treatment in accordance with health and safety guideline
  • Perform a safe and effective Indian head massage with or without oils
  • Select an appropriate oil to improve the condition of a client's hair and/or scalp
  • Be aware of health conditions that may prevent or restrict a treatment being carried out

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may asked to practise your routine at home in between sessions and read through your notes to develop your knowledge and skills

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be given tutor feedback on your practical skills on a weekly basis, with support to help you learn the routine. You will be encouraged to support your peers with the practical work, by receiving a treatment and asking for feedback on comfort, choice of oils and pressure of movement

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring a pen and notepad if possible

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
