Beginners Spanish

Ref: C2524521

This course builds on the previous WEA Spanish Beginners course, so some knowledge of basic vocabulary and language structure is needed if you are joining for the first time. The emphasis is on using language in everyday situations when visiting Spanish speaking countries. This is achieved through the exposition and repetition of key phrases, the use of themed, structured role play exercises and listening to audio material spoken by native speakers.

Course aim

The course will enable learners to communicate in Spanish at a basic level, to discover a little about Spanish speaking cultures and to encourage further study of the language, history and culture of the Spanish speaking world.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand a menu, order food and pay the bill in a restaurant situated in a Spanish speaking country.
  • Talk about myself and my family, including physical appearance, jobs, likes and dislikes, my nationality and where I live.
  • Describe at least three popular fiestas and the work of at least three famous people from the Spanish speaking world.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A file with paper, file dividers and a pen will be needed. A small Spanish-English dictionary and simple phrase book would be useful. Access to the internet for research outside the classroom would be helpful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
