• Show basic understanding of BSL • Show understanding of at least one Deaf person using BSL • Demonstrate understanding of a range of vocabulary within the topics taught • Address, greet and take leave of a Deaf sign language user. • Identify and use a range of simple, commonly used question forms

Course aim

This course is designed to enable students to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) about familiar, day-to-day topics and activities.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • • Be able to conduct a basic conversation with a Deaf person
  • • Use the correct BSL structure
  • • Show understanding by using appropriate responses and giving feedback
  • • Promote language flow by appropriate turn taking and asking for repletion and clarification
  • • Use the correct BSL structure

How will I be taught?

  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
