Continuing to explore the four foundations of art: colour, value, drawing and edge, using different mediums and techniques. From this a familiarity with their tools, and applying the mediums to the surface can arise. Specific topics that will be covered are: abstracting images from sketches, ,memory and photos. Drawing on location. Mixed media. Lino cutting.

Course aim

Continuing to explore the four foundations of art: colour, value, drawing and edge, using different mediums and techniques. From this a familiarity with their tools, and applying the mediums to the surface can arise.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Students will be able to mix neutrals from a split primary palette
  • Students will create a Lino print plate
  • Students will abstract an image from a previous drawing/photo/memory
  • Students will be able to distinguish between high and low values.
  • Students will consider soft edges and hard edges to create a focal point in their images

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook and develop their practice at home and during the holidays

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Materials needed for the course will include regular and colourful drawing materials eg: coloured pencils, crayons, oil pastels, charcoal and something to draw on.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
