Painting and Drawing

This introductory art course teaches students basic drawing and painting skills: Understanding perspective, shapes and shadows, and using pencil, pen and ink drawing, coloured pencils, and pastels. It will teach you how to sketch and draw people, plants and animals, to look at proportion and form. It teaches techniques of painting in creative Watercolour and encourages the student to relax with their painting style. this is not realism but impressionism. This is an excellent starting point for people who simply want to learn to draw and paint.

Course aim

This starter course is for people who want to learn Drawing & Watercolour Painting skills. we will be looking at 7 elements of art; Line, Colour, Shape, Form, Value, Space, Texture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • draw in a variety of media
  • understand a glossary of artistic terms such as, Line, Form, Tones, Composition, glazing,
  • apply shading to create a 3d drawing
  • understand a Colour wheel
  • complete a watercolour painting

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • As well as being a teacher for 18 years, your Tutor is also a practicing Professional Artist exhibiting is city galleries and completing commission work. You will be well supported by a wealth of experience to assist your own development.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • a list of materials will be provide at the first session. Some basic tools and materials will be supplied but you may be asked to purchase additional low cost materials yourself.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • it is always useful to have something or someone who inspires you. It would be beneficial to have an idea of what that is to discuss as the first session.

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Art is a great way to stimulate the mind and lower your heart rate through relaxation. This course is designed to assist your health and well being as well as teach you new skills .
