You will explore Pencil Sketching and aspects Watercolour Painting including Pen & Wash . You will learn and understand how to mix and apply good colour, harmonious and complimentary as well as learn principles of both colour and linear perspective and composition . By exploring painting styles and techniques used by Artists you admire, this will inspire you to develop your own creativity. You will be using both Still Life and The Landscape as subjects.

Course aim

This course will guide you through practical exercises to build upon your artistic skills in pencil and Watercolour. Whether you want to improve your existing techniques or start from new, this course is an ABC of techniques for you to build on.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • this is a step by step course suitable for those who "can't even draw a straight line" Your tutor is a Professional Artist who can't draw a straight line either.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and apply the principles of colour mixing
  • Have a more confident approach to quick sketches and line drawings
  • Apply and understand basic watercolour techniques such as Wet in Wet and Wet on Dry, Washes and Glazing
  • Use pencil shading and pen & wash techniques
  • Apply yourself to your art in a more confident manner

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • you would be expected to do a small amount of online, gallery or library research to inspire your learning.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Painting and drawing is excellent for your health and well being. It stimulates the brain and lowers the heart rate through relaxation. Art is also a skill which can be developed to any level you choose, it also increases self confidence.
