Exploring Watercolours and Other Media

You will be given the opportunity to create a painting from an exploration the things you love in the world around you. You will use a personal approach in your research, planning, application and style; working in Watercolour and another medium of your choice .

Course aim

The course will provide you with an opportunity to develop your painting skills from your own interests; taking a personal journey into your creativity to produce your own artwork. You will be working in Watercolour and other media.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Research and improve your knowledge on an artist who inspires you, consider what appeals to you about that artists and how that can influence or inspire a change in your own style through an element, tool, colour, technique or painting style.
  • Develop a new approach and a value to the planning and preparation stages of creating an artwork, using quick thumbnail sketches, composition planning and colour exercises
  • Make good choices in the application of media and be more willing to try new approaches to your work
  • become a more of an individual and independent painter.
  • produce a painting that has been well researched, planned and executed.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Art is as individual as each person . An element of self development and independent learning is expected, fully supported by the tutor.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • your tutor is also a professional artist and will support you at every stage and is available to discuss and help develop ideas and activities with individuals and groups. On-going feedback will be given throughout each activity.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring your own paint and paint- surface materials. Some materials can be provided on a loan basis or at cost for those who need assistance. A small amount of additional taster materials and associate equipment will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • This course is based on inspiration from other artists (famous or otherwise) and personal interests. Some fore-thought into what these may be would be useful for open discussion at the first session.
