During this course parents and children will gain confidence working together to make and decorate items and pots in clay, and related art materials, using a variety of methods and tools. Parents and children will produce finished, glazed pieces to take home. Some ideas and methods learned in this course could be applied to other materials at home - air drying clay, plasticine, play dough for example.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to pottery and other art materials with young children aged six and under, and parents/carers. Parents will explore ways to work in clay with children, encouraging and enabling them to develop new skills and confidence.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Support my child to develop creative ideas in clay from images and things that interest them
  • Support my child to make pottery items using a range of methods
  • Support my child to decorate and glaze the finished items
  • Support my child to use tools and pottery equipment and materials effectively and safely
  • Follow Health and Safety practices related to clay work in a studio or classroom.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You and your child should wear comfortable clothes and bring aprons or an old shirt to cover up Access to the internet is helpful for ideas but not essential There may be a small additional charge to cover materials and firing costs
