Ever wanted to teach adults – need a change of career? This could be the course for you! An introduction to teaching in the lifelong learning sector and what it entails. This 3-day course covers the essential ingredients required for making an effective adult tutor. To practise, participants will plan and deliver short micro teach to the group.

Course aim

This course is for students interested in working in the lifelong learning sector. Participants may have some experience of volunteering in classes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for students interested in working in the lifelong learning sector. Participants may have some experience of volunteering in classes. Level 2 in English is required

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify own skills relevant to teaching, including strengths and weaknesses
  • Recognise the need for the following giving 3 reasons for each: schemes of work, session planning, SMART learning outcomes, assessment methods and resources
  • Write a session plan with at least 3 SMART learning outcomes
  • Deliver a short (10-15 minute) micro-teach to the group
  • Demonstrate the importance of assessment and feedback through peer assessment

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks and research There will be research and planning outside of the class for a 10 minute micro teach at end of the course.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Your micro-teach will be observed and evaluated by the tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Tutors will suggest sources of additional information where relevant

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Desirable: reading around the subject; finding out what kind of courses are already available to adults in the area.

What can I do next?

  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • At the end of the course, students can progress onto the Level 3 Award in Education and Training
