Painting and Drawing

During the course you will learn to use a variety of painting and drawing media. These will include the following; Basic pencil drawing, looking at shape and tonal aspects of a subject, learning how to create shape, light and shadow with just with a few pencils. You will learn basic brush strokes and how to mix and apply watercolour paints to add colour to your picture. Achieving good composition and perspective is an important aspect especially in landscape, buildings etc. We will look at how to create these using colour and simple perspective line. Other mediums ( acrylic/pastel) can be introduced during personal projects if individuals have a preference for learning a specific medium.

Course aim

the course will enable you to attain some of the basis principles in the fundaments of painting and drawing skills step by step.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • shade and blend graphite pencil to create a drawing that has a three dimensional effect .
  • choose the correct brushes and materials to use with a specific painting medium, and create effective brush strokes
  • mix at least twelve colours from just three primaries and understand colour relations and how they work with each other.
  • have a better understanding of composition and perspective in a landscape painting
  • produce a painting or drawing of a subject and in the medium of your choice.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • the tutor will give plenty of demonstrations, showing you how to achieve various techniques.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • the tutor will give you on-going feedback throughout the sessions and answer any queries you may have as you progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A list of equipment will be provided & explained in full . Tools can be borrowed although practicing at home is beneficial & require you to have your own. Help with sourcing materials will be given & can be supplied at cost.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
