Discover how to support a child through the transition of entering Secondary school Students will share ideas and take part in activities that aim to support their children’s confidence and skills to help prepare them for starting primary school.

Course aim

To equip students with some understanding of how children might be feeling about starting school.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • • Understand, giving appropriate examples of what the transition to secondary means to parents and recognise, why and how, it might be different for pupils.
  • • Describe ways of improving their child’s confidence and resilience.
  • • Describe ways of improving their child’s ability to form and sustain relationships.
  • • Explain the importance of children being given the chance to ask/answer questions and make / justify choices.
  • • Identify positive steps to take to support their own child’s transition from Primary to Secondary school.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be able to make notes on your own thoughts, ideas and experiences and take those home for future reference. You will be able to take photographs of some of the slide information.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • • You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with them the tutor. And to share with other students, your ideas, experiences and concerns.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

Conditions

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
