Basic Family First Aid

The course is open to anybody who looks after children and infants and be able to deal with an emergency from an injury to illness. You will get the skills you need and get the confidence to do a great job when the need arises though simple theory, practical and discussions. The course is easy to understand and delivered in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to train parents to be able to deal with a medical emergency with their child or infant. To understand in a simple way to deal with an emergency and get help if needed

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course
  • For parents, guardians and those who look after young people and infants

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have the skills to identify and deal with an emergency
  • Have the confidence to deal with an emergency from injury to an illness
  • Use a first aid kit or an alternative effectively and safely
  • Get help when you feel you are unable to do no more

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Theory knowledge with power-point presentations DVD showing how to treat an emergency Practicals to develop hands on skills in the class and practice outside the class

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A notebook and pen to take notes on information you will find useful and can refer to at a later date A basic handout is provided to reinforce knowledge

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
