Seeing live theatre can be the most exciting experience. We will choose two plays currently on in London. (TBC) Students will be advised on how to get cheap tickets: special offers, day tickets etc. The tutor is a professional playwright so will look at the role of the playwright. Also other aspects of the theatre like the role of the actor, the director, the designer. Interactive feedback in class about the plays , also the background of the play, its social and political aspects .Plus reading from the text, audio and visual extracts and occasional guest speakers from the world of theatre.

Course aim

To enhance people`s enjoyment of live theatre by seeing plays in performance and looking at all aspects of the production: the role of the playwright, the director, the actors and design.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • a passion for the theatre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To enjoy plays you wouldn`t otherwise have seen
  • To appreciate the role of the playwright
  • To appreciate the role of the director.
  • To look at the role of the designer
  • To look at different acting styles

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • to see the plays that have been chosen and give feedback to the group

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • To see both plays that are chosen

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • To see both plays chosen

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
