A study has shown that the artists of the prehistoric era were mostly women. This course will question the representations of women in art history and elaborate on the work of women artists before Modern Art.

Course aim

To elaborate on how women have been represented in the field of art history before the Modern era and to discuss the work of women artists absent in the canon since the Renaissance.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss how women have been represented in the art since the Renaissance.
  • Focus on why women artists have been absent from the canon of art history.
  • Identify the key works of women artists absent from the Renaissance until the 19th century
  • Understand how women art historians in the 1970s have changed the field

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • Nothing else is needed
