London is a diverse city with many distinct places. Each taster course explores one small corner of the city, its history, people and buildings, and its development over time. As an active arts course, it is also an opportunity for a fulfilling walk! There are no fees to venues

Course aim

The aim of this short course is to actively engage in a local area to gain a brief overview of an area’s local history.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • You should be able to walk at a reasonable pace for up to two hours.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Understand places and people historically in a specific area of London
  • Review your understanding of local history
  • Measure a small personal health benefit from the walk
  • Follow up topics from the course through individual research

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Students will be encouraged to express their opinions, answer questions and make contributions during the course, and to shape its content.

What else do I need to know?

  • Appropriate shoes and clothing for walking during spring. - Writing materials for making notes. - A bottle of drinking water.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Notes will be provided with suggestions for further reading.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • - Similar courses on London are available at other adult education centres and lectures at the Museum of London and the Guildhall Library.
