Drawing and Watercolour Painting for Relaxation is designed to explore different ways of looking; drawing with a range of materials and developing a watercolour painting technique. You will develop observational and imaginative drawing skills using line, textural marks and tonal contrast. You will also learn or develop further a variety of watercolour painting techniques, mixing colour and using transparent glazes. We will look at examples of different styles of drawing that a variety of artists use, work from objects and images and imagination.

Course aim

An introduction to drawing and watercolour for relaxation. Develop observational drawing skills experimenting with a range of materials for line, textural effects and tonal contrast.A variety of techniques with watercolours will also be taught.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to draw from life ( Observational Drawign skills)
  • Be able to create lively drawings using pencil, chalk pastels or charcoal.
  • You will begin to use watercolour painting techniques or improve your ability to use colour and paint handling skills.
  • Be able to use transparent watercolour glazes to build up an image in layers.
  • Improve your well being through enjoying an art session working with other people and socialising.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • An apron or wear clothes you don't mind getting some paint on.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
