Practical Drawing and Painting

The drawing and painting course is designed to explore different ways of looking; drawing with a range of materials including pastels ( which contemporary artists and the Impresssionist painters used), and developing colour knowledge and painting technique. We will look at examples of different styles of drawing and painting that a variety of artists use.

Course aim

Introduction to drawing and watercolour painting techniques:Start a fresh with art or improve your art practice. Come and join a group of people in a warm and friendly atmosphere and enjoy making art in an imaginative way.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will learn new watercolour painting techniques or improve use of paint handling.
  • Improve your well being through enjoying an art session working with other people and socialising with others interested in art.
  • Start to develop a knowledge of other artists and art movements.
  • You will develop observational drawing techniques also showing tonal contrast and form.
  • You will learn or develop your knowledge of colour mixing and colour theory.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • For painting you may want to bring an apron or wear clothes you dont mind getting paint on.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
