We hope to be making nine patchwork blocks that at the end of the 11 weeks can be made up in to a large quilt with the addition of borders

Course aim

Working with fabric to create textiles for the home this term we hope to be making a small quilt starting with nine blocks.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn to use a rotary cutter
  • the correct way to measure fabric
  • Make templates
  • Use a sewing machine
  • A method of speed piecing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • sometimes you will be asked to complete the work in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • To keep a folder with your handouts and made blocks

What else do I need to know?

  • There is a selection of equipment at the class but you will need to provide your own fabric in your colour choice plus the sewing thread in an appropriate colour to match your choice

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Look at magazines with patchwork also look on line at patchwork and quilting

What can I do next?

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • gather your work as a portfolio to go onto a City and Guilds Patchwork course. level 1 or 2
