This mosaic course is a highly enjoyable way to be creative for those with no previous art experience or skills, especially for people who are stimulated by playing with shapes and colour. You will also learn the basic principles and techniques of mosaic making, completing a design from start to finish then take home your item, join in with a group mosaic or sell the artwork at the upcoming Fair. All materials are included, although you are welome to bring your own unwanted tiles or crockery. We will also look at popular Roman mosaic motifs and explore why mosaic medium has been an enduring and ongoing tradition as a contemporary art form. This course is especially suitable for the retired and over 65s, improves manual dexterity, concentration and there is assitance available for all abilities.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the principles of mosaic making which can be applied to various surfaces as decoration or image e.g a mirror border, to generate a group mosaic for the Millman Resource Centre and to make artwork for the Summer Fair.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • successfully create with cut shapes and coloured tiles to make a harmonious artwork
  • understand the stages of making a mosaic from design to completion ( using grout)
  • expand my knowledge of techniques to create exciting designs in different forms e.g a mirror mosaic, a decorative pot, a group project
  • work with others to combine artwork for a group project and enjoy a lively social environment

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You are welcome to bring unwanted patterned or coloured crockery that can be broken up to add to your mosaic work.
