Tai Chi and Yoga

This is an introductory course for people interested in finding out what Tai Chi and Qi Gong are, as well as for those wishing to learn and practice Tai Chi in a group setting. Classes will include low impact stretching exercises to improve muscle strength and flexibility in the joints, basic foundation Tai Chi walking and balancing exercises, and postures and movements of the Tai Chi 24 Form in Yang style.They will also practice basic yoga postures and breathing techniques to improve physical fitness and mental relaxation.

Course aim

To introduce the principles and practice of Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Yoga for beginners and improvers, incorporating foundation exercises, postures and movement.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the history, philosophy, and principles of tai chi chuan and yoga
  • Understand how tai chi and yoga practice promote and improve health
  • Perform suitable warm up and cool down safely.
  • Perform 12 Daoyin Qi Gong postures
  • Improve breathing techniques, posture and mental focus through Tai Chi and Yoga practice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be encouraged to practice at home between sessions

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Wear comfortable clothing and flexible shoes Bring water and a shawl or blanket
