Discover how to support a child through the transition of entering secondary school. On this taster session, students will consider the concerns they or their children have about starting secondary school for the first time and discuss strategies and activities they can use to support their child in this transition.

Course aim

To equip students with some understanding of how children might be feeling about starting school

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Give an example of how a child might be feeling about starting school
  • Describe 2 strategies to support a child starting school
  • Create an activity to use with a child who is starting school

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks and research

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • You may want to bring a notepad and pen

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Progress to another WEA course such as ‘Supporting your child through transition’ ‘Introduction to Helping in Schools’
