The harvesting of plant materials and types of herbal medicine preparations. Different ways of applying herbs. The top ten herbs and herbal first aid. Clinical evidence of effectiveness. Case studies: Meadowsweet and Kava Kava. The medical or reductionist approach and the holistic approach. Organoleptic testing. Factors affecting therapeutic properties.

Course aim

To develop knowledge and practical skills to strengthen health and wellbeing. To enable students to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the course. To develop an understanding of current controversies in health.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List types of herbal medicine preparations.
  • Outline uses of some popular herbal medicines.
  • Outline research evidence for the effectiveness of specific herbs.
  • Describe the reductionist and holistic approaches to herbal medicine.
  • Explain factors that affect the therapeutic properties of herbal medicines.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A handout will be provided that contains notes on all the planned topics of the talk.
