The Art of North America

Ref: C2420065

The art of the United States and Canada is often startlingly powerful and original. We shall start with the mid-18th century, but focus particularly on how art in the 19th and 20th centuries reflects the enormous geographical expansion and social and cultural change. We shall begin with the 18th century artists steeped in the British tradition of portraiture, then discuss how the Revolution and opening up of the interior in the 19th century gave landscape and figurative painting a uniquely American style and atmosphere. We shall explore the impact on art of Native American and African American culture and of the growth of the United States as a world power. There will be an in depth look at some important 19th and 20th century art movements and individual artists, for example American Impressionists, the Group of Seven in Canada, the ‘Ash Can’ school, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Norman Rockwell, Mark Rothko and Andrew Wyeth.
