This history course will look at the expansion of the British Empire from its origins in the 17th century. It will concentrate on looking at the changing motives of the empire builder. Using contemporary and modern sources as well as novels, pictures and film clips, it will examine its continued significance and impact today.

Course aim

This history course will provide a brief introduction to the expansion of the British Empire from its earliest days looking particularly at the motives of the empire builders

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a basic understanding of the pre conditions which allowed for the expansion of the British Empire in the 17th centure
  • Have a basic understanding of the motives of the early empire builders
  • Be able to describe some of the impacts of the British Empire which are still evident today

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
