Literature: Apocalypse London: The City in Science fiction

Ref: C2420009

Exploring representations of London in works of dystopian/science fiction, written between the 1890s and the 1970s. Learners will read 5 works of fiction, in full or extracts, and in each session we will discuss the books’ themes and the writers’ approaches to the subject matter.

Course aim

We'll be reading and exploring works of fiction in which London is the setting for disaster -- from space invasion, to environmental catastrophe and plantlife and animal attacks on the city and its inhabitants

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify key themes that recur in these works PLUS the differences in the approach to these themes shown by individual authors.
  • Locate each work within the historical context in which it was written.
  • Define significant anxieties about ‘modernity’ and urban life that these books reveal.
  • Pursue further reading on these subjects and authors, with detailed bibliographies/secondary reading lists.

How will I be taught?

  • Learners are invited to read the books, or extracts from the books, in advance

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • No formal feed back will occur but the tutor will use informal assessment methods to assess progress

What else do I need to know?

  • The books are all available from your local library or as inexpensive paperbacks or as online downloads. Apart from that, a pen or pencil, a notepad and an inquiring mind!

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Optional pre-course reading of the five books, but the tutor is happy for learners to attend without having read the works in advance
