Films and Directors

Ref: C2419999

We will study the role of key film directors and stars through a wide range of extracts. The course will enable students to discuss and analyse examples from film history and contemporary cinema. We will consider what these films represent for different audiences, and how critics have responded. We will discuss questions of identity, culture and film as an art form.

Course aim

Using a wide range of extracts, we will focus on the contributions of diverse directors and stars across world cinema.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The course will provide opportunities to discuss any experience the students already have in thinking about directors and stars.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the way directors use film form in selected extracts of world cinema.
  • Analyse the role of the star in selected extracts of world cinema.
  • Understand the work of selected stars and directors in relation to their social and historical context.
  • Apply key terms from film theory to gain a deeper understanding of debates around authorship and stardom.
  • Students will increase their knowledge of the role played by key directors and stars in the film industry. This will include consideration of issues raised by the identity of the director or star, and how they are presented.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Students simply need to bring pen and paper. Further viewing and reading material will be recommended, but this will not be compulsory.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
